Sudan Gold Mine Collapse Kills 67, Several Others Missing
At least 67 people have been killed and several others remain missing after a gold mine collapsed in Sudan’s West Kordofan State, with rescuers searching for workers trapped beneath the rubble.
The collapse occurred late Tuesday at the al-Zara gold mine near Nuhud. Survivors said people were still trapped in several shafts, while the lack of machinery was hampering efforts to remove the collapsed soil and debris.
A medical group warned that the death toll could rise as search and rescue operations continue. The mine is located in an area controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, amid Sudan’s ongoing conflict with the military.
Sudan’s gold mining sector has been plagued by frequent accidents linked to poor safety standards. In July, 15 people were killed after another gold mine collapsed in the Wadi Halfa area of northern Sudan.
