Somalia Expresses Regret Over U.S. Entry Denial of CAF Referee Omar Artan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia has expressed disappointment following the decision by authorities of the United States to deny entry to internationally recognised Somali football referee, Mr. Omar Abdulkadir Artan.

Mr. Artan, who was recently honoured as CAF Referee of the Year 2025, is widely regarded as one of Somalia’s most accomplished sports figures and a symbol of national pride.

His recognition on the continental stage has been celebrated as a milestone for Somali sport and youth development.

According to the Ministry, the Somali government engaged relevant diplomatic channels in an effort to support and facilitate Mr. Artan’s travel arrangements. Despite these interventions, entry approval was not granted.

While expressing regret over the outcome, the government reaffirmed its pride in Mr. Artan’s achievements, describing his career as an inspiration to young people across Somalia and beyond.

His rise, the Ministry noted, reflects the value of discipline, talent, and perseverance in achieving international success.

Mr. Artan has since returned safely to Somalia and is expected to continue his officiating duties both nationally and internationally, with the same level of professionalism and dedication that has defined his career.

Omar Abdulkadir Artan has gained prominence within African football through his officiating roles in major Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions.

His recent recognition as CAF Referee of the Year 2025 marked a historic moment for Somalia’s presence in international football officiating.

Entry restrictions involving athletes, officials, and sports delegates occasionally arise from visa and security clearance procedures, particularly for individuals traveling under international sporting assignments.

Such cases often draw diplomatic attention due to the symbolic importance of sports figures in national representation.
