Shell Exits Nigeria After Decades in Major Business Shift
Shell Petroleum B.V. has agreed to sell its entire interest in Shell Nigeria Gas Group, marking a significant change in its involvement in Nigeria’s domestic energy market.

The company announced the agreement on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, confirming that the transaction covers its gas distribution operations serving industrial and commercial customers across Nigeria.
Shell Nigeria Gas has operated in the country for more than 25 years, supplying gas to businesses and industries while building its presence in the domestic energy sector.
In a statement, Shell said the business had benefited from the dedication and expertise of its employees throughout its years of operation.
The company expressed confidence that the agreement would provide a stronger foundation for the business under new ownership, although it did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction.
Despite the planned sale, Shell said it would continue concentrating on strategic deepwater operations and integrated gas activities in Nigeria.
The development marks a shift in Shell’s domestic gas distribution interests, but it does not mean the company is withdrawing completely from Nigeria.
Its continued focus on deepwater projects and integrated gas operations indicates that Shell intends to maintain its presence in the country through selected energy investments.
