Lawyers Charging Clients in Dollars Face EFCC Prosecution

Lawyers who charge their clients in dollars and other foreign currencies may face prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The commission issued the warning through the Acting Zonal Director of its Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, ACE I Bawa Usman Kaltungo, during a meeting with the Nigerian Bar Association Lagos Task Force on Illegal Practice of Law.

Kaltungo spoke on Friday, September 11, 2026, when the task force delegation, led by its Head, Moshood Abiola, visited his office in Lagos.

The EFCC director expressed concern over some practices within the legal profession which he described as illegal and unethical.

He warned that the commission would not hesitate to take legal action against practitioners found culpable.

“The Commission would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable,” Kaltungo said.

The meeting also focused on issues surrounding illegal practice of law and the need for greater professional compliance within the legal profession.

The EFCC’s position places lawyers who receive professional fees in foreign currencies under increased scrutiny, particularly where such transactions run contrary to existing financial regulations.

The commission urged practitioners to conduct their professional dealings within the limits of the law to avoid sanctions.
