Golden Boot Battle Ignites as Messi and Mbappé Share World Cup Scoring Lead
The race for the Golden Boot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has burst wide open after France’s quarter-final victory over Morocco saw Kylian Mbappé pull level with Lionel Messi at the top of the scoring chart.
Messi looked set to strengthen his grip on the award after scoring in Argentina’s victory over Egypt to take his tally to eight goals.
However, Mbappé responded in emphatic fashion, finding the net as France defeated Morocco 2-0 to move alongside the Argentine captain with eight goals each.
With both superstars now locked on the same number of goals, the battle to finish as the tournament’s leading scorer promises to go down to the wire.
Norway’s Erling Haaland remains within touching distance on seven goals, while England skipper Harry Kane has six and could yet force his way into the contest as the knockout rounds continue.
France winger Ousmane Dembélé sits fifth with five goals, while Senegal’s Ismaïla Sarr, Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal, England midfielder Jude Bellingham, Mexico striker Julián Quiñones and Brazil forward Vinícius Júnior have each netted four times.
