Diddy Faces Fresh Scrutiny Over Tupac Killing as Keffe D Trial Unfolds

American music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is facing renewed scrutiny over the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur as the trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis continues in Las Vegas.

Davis is standing trial over allegations that he helped plan the shooting that killed Shakur during the bitter rivalry between rival factions of the American hip-hop industry.

The development has once again brought Combs’ name into the case, with legal sources suggesting that prosecutors could consider possible action against him if Davis is convicted.

Davis has previously made several claims about Shakur’s killing in police interviews, documentary appearances and a memoir. Prosecutors have used some of those statements as part of their case.

Authorities allege that Davis was inside the white Cadillac involved in the shooting and later handed the gun to the person who fired the fatal shots.

A secret police recording made in 2008 has also been presented during the trial. In the recording, Davis allegedly described how members of the South Side Compton Crips tracked down Shakur before the shooting.

He also allegedly claimed that Combs offered $1 million to have Shakur killed.

Davis has denied the allegations, arguing that some of the statements he made were intended to gain fame and notoriety rather than provide a truthful account of the events.

Prosecutors, however, maintain that his repeated accounts of the killing carry weight and support their case.

A source close to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office told The Telegraph that a conviction for Davis could potentially open the door for prosecutors to take action against Combs.

“The door remains open on what charges could be made against Diddy,” the source said, adding that a conviction would give prosecutors a reason to consider further action.

However, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson has not publicly confirmed that Combs would face charges if Davis is found guilty.

Police have also not identified Combs as a suspect in Shakur’s murder.

Combs has consistently rejected the allegations, previously describing claims linking him to the killing as “pure fiction and completely ridiculous.”

The allegations surrounding Combs are tied to the intense rivalry between his Bad Boy Records and Suge Knight’s Death Row Records during the 1990s.

At the time, Combs was running Bad Boy Records in New York, while Knight was leading Death Row Records in Los Angeles, the label that represented Shakur.

The rivalry became increasingly bitter after Shakur was shot during an armed robbery. The rapper believed Combs and people associated with him had connections to the incident, a claim Combs denied.

Tensions rose further after the release of “Who Shot Ya?” by Christopher Wallace, better known as The Notorious B.I.G. Shakur believed the song referred to the earlier shooting, although Wallace and Combs denied that it was connected to the incident.

Prosecutors have so far avoided bringing allegations concerning Combs’ possible involvement into the centre of Davis’ trial, with a source saying doing so could confuse the case and influence the jury.

Combs is not expected to testify, although his name has already featured in the proceedings.

Several people associated with his former record label are also expected to appear as potential witnesses, including a former Bad Boy Records business partner and a former bodyguard.

Suge Knight is also listed as a potential witness. He is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence over a hit-and-run conviction.

Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in September 1996. Six months later, Wallace was fatally shot in Los Angeles.

Their deaths became defining moments in the East Coast-West Coast hip-hop rivalry and remained unsolved for decades.

Combs has since faced a separate federal criminal case. In 2025, he was prosecuted on charges including racketeering and sex trafficking but was acquitted of the most serious allegations.

He was later sentenced to four years and two months in prison after being convicted of lesser prostitution-related offences.

For now, no charges have been announced against Combs in connection with Shakur’s death.

But with Davis’ trial still unfolding, attention is once again turning to the question that has surrounded the case for decades: could the verdict finally lead investigators back to Diddy?
