Canada and France Forge Closer Ties as Trump Pressure Mounts
Canada and France have pledged stronger cooperation as Ottawa seeks closer European partnerships amid growing tensions with the United States.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met Sunday in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.
The meeting marked Macron’s first visit to the French territory since 2014 and the first by a Canadian prime minister.
Their discussions covered trade, energy, climate change, space, sovereignty and other growing geopolitical concerns.
Carney said changing global conditions were creating new challenges for democratic institutions, national sovereignty and international cooperation.
He called for stronger ties between Canada and France as Ottawa works to expand its relationship with Europe.
Macron said both countries shared commitments to democracy, international law, free trade and science-based decision-making.
The meeting came amid increasingly difficult relations between Canada and the United States.
US President Donald Trump recently shared a map showing Canada and several other territories beneath the American flag.
Saint-Pierre and Miquelon was included in the map, alongside French territories in the Caribbean.
Macron dismissed suggestions that the French territory could be considered anything other than French.
He said France’s sovereignty over the territory did not require constant reaffirmation because of unusual statements.
The Atlantic territory is strategically important to France because of its location near Canada and the wider North Atlantic.
Energy cooperation was also discussed, particularly Canada’s potential to increase liquefied natural gas exports to Europe.
Macron said Canadian LNG projects could help strengthen Europe’s energy supplies.
The leaders also discussed Canada’s proposed closer relationship with the European Union.
The bloc has proposed making Canada its first associate member, creating a new framework for deeper cooperation.
Macron said France supported the proposal as Canada seeks stronger economic relationships beyond the United States.
However, deeper EU-Canada integration could face obstacles.
Several EU countries have yet to ratify the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the bloc.
France is among the countries that have not completed the ratification process.
The Saint-Pierre and Miquelon meeting therefore carried significance beyond the two countries’ bilateral relationship.
It highlighted Canada’s efforts to broaden its international partnerships while managing increasingly difficult relations with Washington.
For France, stronger Canadian ties could expand cooperation in energy, trade, climate policy and strategic affairs.
The leaders ended their meeting by signalling plans to pursue closer cooperation across several sectors.
