I remember running into a quote in the distant past that says, “we are all tourists in history, and horrible things happen when we forget.” That piece of information got me thinking especially on how each and everyone of us has been a victim of that reality.

The truth remains that the importance of remembering and learning from historical events can never be underemphasized. Because when we forget or ignore some impactful lessons from history, we risk repeating the mistakes of the past and allowing horrible things to happen again.

The part I like most in the quote says “tourists in history” and the idea in view is, we are all temporary visitors to the past, and it’s our responsibility to learn from it and genuinely move on.

According to Today in History, behold some remarkable historical events that were.

On this day in 1499, the citizens of Lisbon celebrated the triumphal return of the explorer Vasco de Gama, completing his two-year journey around the Cape of Good Hope to India.
