NBA Owerri Branch Human Rights Committee Visits Imo State Correctional Centre, Explores Collaboration on Access to Justice
In furtherance of its commitment to the protection of fundamental rights and the promotion of access to justice, the Human Rights Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Owerri Branch, today paid a courtesy visit to the Imo State Correctional Centre, where the delegation was received by the Deputy Controller, Mr. Chidi Eke.
The delegation, led by the Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Ekezie K. Onumajulu Esq., comprised Victoria Joshua, Franklin Agughalam, Chidiebere Enyia, Richard Agumanu and Uchenna S. Nnadozie, alongside Goodluck Okebata, a member of the Volunteer Network.

Discussions centred on practical areas of collaboration towards strengthening access to justice for inmates, particularly indigent persons whose circumstances hinder their ability to secure legal representation or meet financial obligations necessary for their release. The Deputy Controller shared the Centre’s operational constraints as well as its achievements, providing valuable insights into opportunities for constructive engagement.
As part of the proposed collaboration, the Committee formally requested a list of inmates who require legal services but cannot afford counsel, as well as data on convicted inmates who remain in custody solely because they are unable to pay their fines. These requests are intended to help the Committee identify cases requiring intervention and explore appropriate avenues of legal assistance and support.
