WAFCON 2026: Four African Teams Secure 2027 World Cup Places
Four African nations have booked their places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after reaching the semi-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Malawi, Morocco, Algeria and Cameroon are the four teams that have advanced to the last four of the continental championship and, in the process, secured automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
The 2026 WAFCON is serving as the qualifying competition for the African teams seeking places at the global tournament. As a result, the four semi-finalists have already guaranteed themselves World Cup berths.
Morocco secured its place in the semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa, while Algeria edged past Ivory Coast by the same scoreline.
Cameroon also booked a semi-final ticket after defeating Nigeria 1-0, while Malawi produced one of the biggest surprises of the quarter-finals by overcoming Ghana 2-1.
The semi-final fixtures are scheduled for Wednesday, with Morocco facing Cameroon in one encounter and Algeria taking on Malawi in the other.
Although Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Africa were eliminated at the quarter-final stage, their World Cup hopes are not completely over.
The four losing quarter-finalists will face one another for a chance to advance to the intercontinental play-offs, where another route to the 2027 Women’s World Cup will be available.
