Malawi Defeat Egypt 3-1 in Rabat to Progress to WAFCON Quarter-Finals

Tournament surprise package Malawi extended their fairytale run at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a historic 3-1 victory over Egypt at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium.

Lovemore Fazili’s Scorchers displayed immense tactical discipline and offensive efficiency to unpick a highly desperate, back-to-the-wall Egyptian outfit.

This second consecutive group stage victory mathematically books a historic knockout phase ticket for the debutants, while prematurely eliminating a heartbroken Egypt from the tournament.

The Scorchers seized control early in the first half, taking a commanding two-goal advantage into the interval after catching the Egyptian backline exposed on multiple transitions.

Even after being reduced to ten players early in the second half following a 52nd-minute red card, Malawi refused to compromise their shape and added a decisive third via a brilliant Temwa Chawinga header.

Egypt managed to pull one back through a sensational, long-range direct free kick from defender Mahira Ali, but it proved to be a mere late consolation.

This definitive outcome cements Malawi’s place at the absolute summit of Group C alongside high-flying regional rivals Zambia.

Conversely, Mohamed Kamal’s shell-shocked Pharaohs find themselves cemented at the bottom of the standings following back-to-back defeats.

The rampant Scorchers will now head into their final matchday with zero pressure, while the rest of the group scrambles to claim the final remaining qualification slots
