Michael Morales Confirmed as Backup Fighter for UFC 330 Title Fight
Undefeated Ecuadorian welterweight Michael Morales has revealed that he will serve as the official backup fighter for the UFC 330 main event between champion Islam Makhachev and Ian Garry.
Morales disclosed that the UFC has asked him to be on standby in case either Makhachev or Garry is unable to compete due to injury or a failed weight cut ahead of the August 15 event in Philadelphia.
“They told me I had to wait for the fight between Ian and Islam, and then I’d be next,” Morales said. “Right now, they’ve brought me in as the backup. If one of them can’t fight, I’ll step in. If the fight goes ahead as planned, then I’ll wait for my title opportunity.”
The 27-year-old has built an impressive 19-0 professional record and is considered one of the fastest-rising contenders in the UFC’s welterweight division. Morales is coming off three consecutive knockout victories, including a dominant finish over Sean Brady at UFC 322.
Although both Makhachev and Garry have strong records of making weight, the UFC has chosen to have Morales ready as a replacement should any unexpected situation arise before fight night.
If no changes occur, Morales is expected to remain next in line for a shot at the UFC welterweight title.
