Esther Nworgu Delivers Record Lift as Nigeria Lands First Glasgow 2026 Gold
Esther Nworgu has written her name into the history of the 2026 Commonwealth Games after winning Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing competition in Glasgow, Scotland.

Competing in the women’s para powerlifting lightweight category, Nworgu produced a Games-record lift of 119.0kg to finish at the top of the standings.
Nigeria also secured the silver medal in the event through another Esther, as Esther Onyema lifted 115.5kg to take second place. England’s Olivia Broome settled for bronze after recording 106.6kg.
Kenya’s Hellen Wawira Kariuki finished fourth, followed by England’s Charlotte McGuinness in fifth and India’s Suman Devi in sixth.
The gold medal added to Nigeria’s strong start at the Games. Roland Ezuruike had earlier claimed silver in the men’s lightweight event, while the country secured another silver medal on the opening day.

Team Nigeria has now recorded three medals in Glasgow, including one gold and two silver medals.
