US-led intelligence alliance warns AI cyber threats could emerge within months

A coalition of intelligence agencies from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand has warned that advanced artificial intelligence systems may soon be capable of powering large-scale cyberattacks against governments and businesses.

In a joint advisory, the Five Eyes alliance said the rapid progress of “frontier AI” models could significantly reshape cyber warfare, reducing the barriers for attackers and increasing the speed, scale, and sophistication of digital intrusions.

The group stressed that these capabilities could emerge in months rather than years.

The warning comes amid growing global concern over the security implications of advanced AI systems, including fears that they could be exploited to uncover software vulnerabilities, bypass safeguards, and automate complex hacking operations.

According to the statement, both state-backed actors and independent cybercriminals could gain powerful new tools, making critical infrastructure, corporate networks, and public services more vulnerable to attack if defenses are not strengthened.

The alliance urged governments and private organizations to urgently upgrade cybersecurity systems, patch outdated software, and restrict access to sensitive infrastructure.

It also encouraged wider adoption of AI-driven defensive tools, noting that the same technology driving new threats could also help detect vulnerabilities, monitor unusual activity, and speed up incident response.

The alert follows heightened scrutiny in the United States over advanced AI models and their potential misuse, including internal concerns raised around leading systems developed by major AI companies.

Discussions are ongoing between policymakers and developers on how to balance innovation with security safeguards.

Cybersecurity experts say the message reflects a growing consensus that AI is rapidly becoming both a defensive asset and an offensive weapon in the digital landscape, with implications for organizations of all sizes, not just governments and large corporations.
