The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Oyo State chapter, has urged students to remain resilient, aim high, and prioritise their mental and physical well-being as part of activities marking International Women’s Day.

The State President, Dr Shakirat Olanlege, gave the advice during an outreach programme at Anglican Commercial Grammar School Senior, where she stressed the need to inspire young people, especially girls, to believe in their potential and pursue professional success in any field of their choice.

“We are giving them the opportunity to be motivated so they can become future leaders that are resilient and that we can be proud of,” she said, adding that women can achieve just as much as men when given the right support and mindset.

Dr Olanlege, alongside other medical professionals, shared personal experiences to inspire students to strive for excellence, noting that their journeys demonstrate that success is achievable through dedication and perseverance.

Addressing growing concerns about youth mental health, she warned against drug abuse and negative peer influence, which she said contribute to depression among young people, particularly after academic setbacks.

“Failure in exams is not the end of the world. Students should study hard and plan properly, and even if they fail, they should not resort to harmful decisions or substance use,” she said.

The outreach also coincided with awareness efforts following World Oral Health Day. Dr Olanlege educated students on proper oral hygiene practices, including brushing at least twice daily and reducing the intake of sugary foods.

She encouraged healthier alternatives such as fruits, vegetables, and balanced diets to promote overall well-being.

She further linked individual health to national development, noting that healthy children grow into healthy adults, ultimately leading to a stronger society.

“Healthy families build healthy communities, and that creates a healthy nation,” she said.

In her remarks, the principal of Anglican Commercial Grammar School Senior, Mrs Janet Olanrewaju, commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.

She noted that exposing students—especially girls—to positive role models would motivate them to dream bigger and pursue success across various fields, reinforcing the message that women can excel beyond traditional expectations.

“The office of a woman is not just in the kitchen. They should aspire to be great, focus on their education, remain disciplined, and be resilient,” she said.

Mrs Oje emphasised resilience as a key factor for success, acknowledging that while the journey to achievement may be challenging, determination and persistence can help young people overcome obstacles.

The event, including market outreach to Bodija market, formed part of MWAN’s broader efforts to empower young people and women to become confident, responsible individuals capable of contributing meaningfully to society.
