Video Shows Moment Crucifix Falls on Ecuador Priest During Mass, Killing Him
A video showing the moment a large crucifix fell on a Catholic priest during Mass in Ecuador has circulated on social media following his death.
The priest, identified as Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, was celebrating Mass on Saturday in Guayaquil when the religious structure suddenly fell and struck him on the head.
The incident was captured during a livestream of the church service, showing the moment the crucifix came crashing down on the priest as he addressed worshippers.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death on Sunday in a statement shared on social media, identifying him as the parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate.
The archdiocese expressed sorrow over his death, describing him as a beloved priest who had departed to be with God.
In its statement, the church authorities said, “We announce that our beloved Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, CSsR., who served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate, has departed for the Father’s House to rejoice in His presence and glory.”
The archdiocese also offered prayers for the late priest, asking God to grant him eternal rest and perpetual light.
“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, as authorities have not released an official explanation for the crucifix’s sudden fall.
It is also unknown whether structural damage, faulty fittings or other factors contributed to the accident.
The incident has drawn attention online because it occurred during a livestreamed religious service, allowing viewers to witness the fatal moment.
