Senegal’s Faye Takes Over ECOWAS Leadership Amid Regional Challenges

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

He takes over the leadership of the regional bloc at a time when West Africa is grappling with security threats, political uncertainty and efforts to rebuild regional unity.

Faye was elected during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority held in Sierra Leone on Sunday, succeeding Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, who assumed the position in June 2025.

Bio took over the chairmanship after Nigerian President Bola Tinubu completed his tenure and formally handed over leadership at the 67th Ordinary Session of the Authority in Abuja.

As the new chairman, Faye inherits a challenging agenda, with ECOWAS continuing to confront terrorism, unconstitutional changes of government and the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from the regional bloc.

One of his immediate priorities is expected to be reopening dialogue with the three Sahel countries in a bid to restore cooperation and strengthen regional integration.

At 46, Faye represents a younger generation of African leaders. His emergence has raised expectations that he could inject fresh momentum into reforms aimed at improving governance, institutional accountability and youth inclusion across the sub-region.

His new role also places Senegal at the centre of major diplomatic and political decisions as ECOWAS works to respond to evolving security and economic challenges.

The summit also approved the appointment of Biram Diop as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, succeeding Dr Omar Touray.
