What I’ll Do If Nigeria Fails to Improve Under Atiku’s Government After One Year– Amaechi
Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has said he would resign from government if Nigerians fail to experience positive changes within one year of an administration led by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
Amaechi made the statement during an interview on NewsCentral TV on Friday, November 6, 2026, while discussing the ADC’s plans for Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election. He said he was prepared to leave government if he failed to perform his responsibilities as vice-president.
Speaking about his relationship with Atiku, the former governor said the presidential candidate understood his character and knew that he would not remain in government if he was unable to deliver on his responsibilities.
He stated, “I’m sure the president knows my character, the presidential candidate (Atiku Abubakar) knows my character, that if I’m not performing, I may likely leave government.” When asked directly whether he would resign as vice-president if he failed to perform, Amaechi replied, “Of course. I’m not joking.”
The ADC vice-presidential candidate also expressed confidence that an Atiku-led administration would receive widespread public support within its first year.
He predicted that Nigerians would appreciate the former vice-president’s leadership and regret not voting for him in previous elections.
Amaechi said, “But the way the situation is and the way I know Atiku, our first year in office, he will be hailed as a hero.” He further stated that Nigerians would regret not giving Atiku the opportunity to govern the country earlier.
On the economy, the former transportation minister explained that the ADC was proposing a production subsidy aimed at reducing petrol prices through the supply of crude oil to local refiners below international market rates.
He said the arrangement would require participating refiners to transfer the benefits of the subsidy to consumers through lower pump prices.
According to Amaechi, refiners that failed to reduce their prices would lose access to the subsidised crude oil and would have to purchase it at the international market rate.
He explained that the policy was designed to ensure that government support translated into cheaper petrol rather than simply increasing the profits of local refining companies.
Speaking on agriculture, Amaechi said an ADC-led government would review existing agricultural policies, encourage local farmers and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported food. He argued that increased agricultural production would create employment, generate wealth and help address insecurity across the country.
The ADC vice-presidential candidate also insisted that the party would not suspend its political activities because of the court judgment affecting its leadership.
His remarks came after the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled in favour of Nafiu Bala Gombe in the leadership dispute involving the David Mark-led caretaker committee. The ADC rejected the judgment and announced that it had filed an appeal and an application for a stay of execution, maintaining that its preparations for the 2027 general election would continue.
