Guinea-Bissau Shock Super Eagles With Stunning 3-0 Defeat

Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a heavy setback in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign on Tuesday, losing 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau in Bissau.

The defeat came at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in a Group L encounter that saw the hosts punish Nigeria with goals from Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Álvaro Djaló.

Guinea-Bissau took the lead in the 15th minute when Djú finished a move assisted by Renato Nhaga, leaving Nigeria trailing 1-0 at half-time.

The Super Eagles had more possession after the break and finished the match with 55.3 per cent of the ball, compared with Guinea-Bissau’s 44.7 per cent. Nigeria also recorded 12 shots, the same number as the hosts.

However, the hosts were more clinical in front of goal, registering seven shots on target against Nigeria’s five.

Baldé doubled Guinea-Bissau’s advantage in the 66th minute, with Mamadi Camará providing the assist as Nigeria struggled to find a response.

The hosts completed the victory deep into stoppage time when Djaló scored in the 95th minute, turning a difficult evening for Nigeria into a decisive 3-0 defeat.

Nigeria’s passing statistics showed that the Super Eagles enjoyed periods of control, completing 370 passes at an 84.1 per cent accuracy rate, compared with Guinea-Bissau’s 303 passes at 78.9 per cent.

Nigeria also recorded more successful passes in the final third, 72 to Guinea-Bissau’s 40, and had 24 crosses compared with the hosts’ 10.

Despite those numbers, Guinea-Bissau converted their opportunities more effectively and defended their advantage to secure all three points.

The result follows Nigeria’s opening 2-1 victory over Madagascar and leaves the Super Eagles with three points from their first two Group L matches.

Guinea-Bissau, meanwhile, had opened their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Tanzania before producing another strong performance against Nigeria.

The 3-0 result gives the Djurtus an important advantage in the early stages of the qualification race, while Nigeria will now have to respond in their remaining fixtures.
