13-Year-Old Allegedly Kills Teacher, Injures Two in Slovakia School Knife Attack

A 13-year-old schoolboy has been detained after allegedly killing a teacher and injuring another teacher and a pupil in a knife attack at a school in northwestern Slovakia.

The attack happened at about 7:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday in Staškov, a village near Slovakia’s border with the Czech Republic.

Police said the teenager allegedly launched the knife attack after the first lesson of the day. He was subsequently detained, with investigators treating the case as suspected premeditated murder.

A 61-year-old female teacher died from her injuries, while another teacher, aged 44, suffered a stab wound to the chest and was taken to hospital.

A schoolgirl was also injured and hospitalised in serious, critical condition, according to Health Minister Kamil Šaško.

The injured teacher was later reported not to be in a life-threatening condition.

Police and emergency responders were deployed to the school following the attack, while authorities later confirmed that the situation was under control.

The motive for the attack had not been established. Education Minister Tomáš Drucker also declined to say whether bullying was connected to the incident.

Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and said he was following developments with concern.

President Peter Pellegrini said he was shocked by the attack and urged citizens to help calm public tensions rather than contribute to further radicalisation.

The incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks at Slovak schools in recent years.

In January 2025, an 18-year-old student attacked a secondary school in Spišská Stará Ves, killing a teacher and another student and injuring another pupil.

In 2020, a teacher was stabbed to death and several other people were wounded in an attack at an elementary school in central Slovakia.

Police are continuing to investigate Tuesday’s attack, including the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing and the motive behind the teenager’s actions.
