The takeaway here is that our understanding of history is shaped by the memories and perspectives of individuals and societies. You may even put it this way, history is not an objective truth, but rather a subjective interpretation of past events, influenced by personal experiences, cultural context, and social narratives.

From Today in History, here are a few events that happened on this day in the distant past.

On this day, 46 BC, Julius Caesar dedicates a temple to Venus Genetrix, fulfilling a vow he made at the Battle of Pharsalus.

Still on this day in 1580, Francis Drake finishes his circumnavigation of the Earth in Plymouth, England.

According to Today in History, in 1933, as gangster Machine Gun Kelly surrenders to the FBI, he shouts out, “Don’t shoot, G-Men!”, which becomes a nickname for FBI agents.

Sadly, on this day in 1954, the Japanese rail ferry Tōya Maru sinks during a typhoon in the Tsugaru Strait, Japan, killing 1,172.

Again, on this day in 1980, a terrorist bombing at the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, kills 13 people and injures 213 others.

Interestingly, on this day in 1984, the United Kingdom and China agree to a transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong, to take place in 1997.

Regrettably, it was on this day in 1992 that a Nigerian Air Force Lockheed C-130 Hercules crashes in Ejigbo, Lagos, killing 159.

Sadly again, in 2002 and on this day, the overcrowded Senegalese ferry, MV Le Joola, capsizes off the coast of the Gambia killing more than 1,000.
