To the remarkable French writer and philosopher, Voltaire, history is the study of all the world’s crime. 
To him, history is a record of the mistakes, injustices, and wrongdoings of the past. It equally reveals that human societies have consistently committed errors and harmed one another throughout history.
The French philosopher points out the darker aspects of human nature and the consequences of our actions through this quote. Carefully embedded in this idea is the fact that he encourages us to learn from past mistakes and strive for a more just and equitable future. Although he comes from a perspective that presents a pessimistic view of human history, there is still a hidden emphasis on the need for self-reflection and improvement.

On this day in 1852, the first powered, passenger-carrying airship, the Giffard dirigible, travels 17 miles (27 km) from Paris to Trappes.
Still on this day in 1890, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officially renounced polygamy.
In 1906, on this day, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt proclaims Devils Tower in Wyoming as the nation’s first National Monument.
According to Today in History, it was on this day in 1948 that the Honda Motor Company was founded.
It was on this day in 1960 that the USS Enterprise, the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, was launched.

Today is Independence Day for Guinea-Bissau. They got their independence from Portugal in 1973.
