Trump Expects Iran Deal After US Midterm Elections
US President Donald Trump has said he expects the United States to reach a deal with Iran after the November midterm elections, while warning that he faces a major decision over whether to pursue negotiations or intensify military action.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Trump said he believed Iran was waiting to see the outcome of the US elections before committing to an agreement. He also reiterated that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains a key priority for his administration.
Trump said Washington had previously offered Iran economic cooperation in exchange for changes to its nuclear programme and other issues. He also repeated claims about damage inflicted on Iran’s military and nuclear capabilities, while warning that the US could take further action if an agreement is not reached.
The remarks come as diplomatic signals have emerged alongside the continuing conflict. Iran has indicated that it is prepared to discuss negotiations, while US officials have also said the door remains open to renewed talks.
