Canada Calls for Permanent Middle East Ceasefire, Urges Return to Talks
Canada has called for a permanent ceasefire in the Middle East, warning that the security situation in the region has become “extremely dangerous.”
Speaking on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand urged all parties to de-escalate tensions, protect civilians, and return to negotiations aimed at securing a lasting peace agreement.
Anand stressed the importance of safeguarding hospitals, schools, and other civilian infrastructure, while also calling for respect for international law and the protection of freedom of navigation through key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
Beyond the conflict, the Canadian foreign minister said her country is working to diversify its trade relationships beyond the United States by pursuing a free trade agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Canada’s latest appeal comes amid continued instability in the Middle East, with international leaders increasingly calling for diplomacy to prevent further escalation.
