German Court Hands Saudi Doctor Life Sentence Over Christmas Market Killings
A German court has sentenced a Saudi doctor to life imprisonment for carrying out a deadly vehicle attack at a Christmas market in the city of Magdeburg, an incident that claimed multiple lives and left hundreds of people injured.
The convict, identified only as Taleb A. under German privacy laws, deliberately drove a rented BMW into a crowded Christmas market on December 20, 2024.
Prosecutors said the attack lasted just over a minute but caused devastating casualties.
Those killed included five women aged between 45 and 75 and a nine-year-old boy, while hundreds of others sustained injuries during the attack.
Taleb A., a psychiatrist originally from Saudi Arabia, was described by prosecutors as someone who had expressed anti-Islamic views and shown sympathy for far-right ideologies.
Investigators said he had planned the attack several weeks in advance.
According to prosecutors, the attack was motivated by his dissatisfaction with the outcome of a civil legal dispute and frustration over what he believed was the authorities’ failure to act on several criminal complaints he had filed.
The attack shocked Germany, prompting nationwide grief and renewed debate over public safety and immigration in the months leading up to the country’s general election in February 2025.
On Friday, the court handed down a life sentence, concluding one of Germany’s most closely watched criminal trials. The ruling was seen as a significant step toward justice for the victims and their families.
