The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has expressed serious concern over renewed clashes in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, after prolonged fighting disrupted parts of the city and left reports of casualties and destruction.

The UN chief condemned the violence and urged all sides to immediately de-escalate tensions, warning that continued confrontation risks worsening an already fragile security situation.

He called for restraint and stressed that disputes should be resolved through dialogue rather than armed confrontation.

In Mogadishu, the situation reportedly escalated late into the night as federal government forces engaged members linked to opposition-aligned groups in clashes that lasted for more than ten hours, with heavy gunfire heard across multiple districts.

Residents described a tense and unusual night as normal city activity was brought to a halt amid the sustained exchange of fire.

The Secretary-General reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting peace, stability, and reconciliation efforts in Somalia as authorities move to restore calm.
