Cape Verde’s remarkable debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a painful end after a spirited 3-2 extra-time defeat to Argentina, but the tournament’s smallest nation left the competition with widespread admiration for its fearless performances.
The Blue Sharks pushed the defending champions to the limit, twice coming from behind before a deflected Cristian Romero header settled the Round of 32 tie.
Cape Verde had earlier impressed with a goalless draw against Spain, earned another point against Uruguay and showed they could compete with football’s biggest nations despite arriving at the tournament ranked 67th in the world.
Head coach Bubista said his players had proved that a small country could stand toe-to-toe with the world’s best, describing their campaign as a proud moment in the nation’s history.
