UN Warns Ebola Outbreak Is Outpacing Containment in DR Congo
The United Nations has warned that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading faster than efforts to bring it under control.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community to step up support as health authorities struggle to contain the rapidly expanding outbreak.
Guterres described it as the fastest-spreading Ebola epidemic ever recorded, warning that the disease was advancing faster than the response designed to stop it.
He said the outbreak could still be contained, stressing that the world already has the knowledge and tools needed to save lives and control Ebola.
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, DR Congo had recorded 5,713 confirmed cases and 2,744 deaths as of August 26.
The latest figures showed 57 additional confirmed cases and 29 more deaths compared with the previous day.
Guterres called for urgent international action, saying stronger support was needed to prevent the outbreak from overwhelming containment efforts.
