UK Skilled Worker Visa: 8 Things That Can Make or Break Your Interview

A UK Skilled Worker visa interview is not the time to struggle to explain the job you have been offered.

Applicants may be asked to demonstrate that they understand their role, know their sponsoring employer and have the skills and experience required to do the work.

The UK Home Office says applicants must genuinely intend and be able to carry out their sponsored role. Where necessary, officials can request further information or invite an applicant for an interview.

For Nigerians preparing for the process, knowing what is contained in the application can be just as important as knowing what to say.

Here are eight areas worth preparing for before the interview.

1. Understand the job you have been offered

Do not depend only on the job title.

Read the job description carefully and understand your main duties, working hours, responsibilities and who you will report to.

You should also be able to explain how your skills and previous experience make you suitable for the position.

2. Research your UK employer

Find out what the company does, where it operates and how your position fits into its business.

Know the company’s name and understand the nature of the organisation sponsoring you.

The Home Office guidance allows caseworkers to consider an applicant’s knowledge of the UK sponsor when assessing whether the employment is genuine.

3. Know how you secured the job

Be prepared to describe how you found the vacancy and what happened after you applied.

You may have applied directly through the company, used a recruitment agency, responded to an online advert or received a referral.

Remember whether you attended an interview and the main stages of the recruitment process. Your explanation should agree with the information in your application.

4. Know the important details on your Certificate of Sponsorship

Go through your Certificate of Sponsorship before the interview.

Pay attention to your job title, occupation code, salary, working hours, start date and sponsor details.

You should also understand the duties attached to the position rather than simply memorising the information on the certificate.

5. Be ready to explain your qualifications and experience

Review your CV, certificates and employment history.

Think about how your previous jobs and professional training relate to the new position.

If you are changing careers or moving into a more senior role, be prepared to explain why the move makes sense.

You should also be ready to explain any significant gap in your employment history if it comes up during questioning.

6. Know your application before you enter the interview

Do not prepare with only your CoS.

Read through your CV, employment documents, job offer, contract and other information submitted with the application.

Check dates, job titles, salaries, employers and duties.

The details should fit together. If there is a genuine difference between two documents, know how to explain it clearly.

7. Expect follow-up questions

Do not prepare only for questions you expect to hear.

An interviewer may ask additional questions based on your answers. Memorised responses can become difficult to maintain when the conversation moves away from the expected script.

Instead, understand the facts surrounding your job and employer.

If you do not understand a question, politely ask the interviewer to repeat or clarify it.

8. Be truthful and avoid trying to sound perfect

Confidence is useful, but pretending to know something you do not know can work against you.

If you are unsure about a minor detail, do not invent an answer.

The Home Office can assess whether an applicant genuinely intends to undertake the sponsored role and whether they have the appropriate skills, qualifications and experience.

Applicants can also be required to attend an interview, and failing to comply without a reasonable explanation may result in refusal.

For Nigerians preparing for a Skilled Worker visa interview, the safest approach is not to memorise answers found online.

Know your job. Know your employer. Know your documents.

Most importantly, make sure the information in your CV, Certificate of Sponsorship, employment documents and interview answers is consistent.

The aim is not to impress the interviewer with complicated answers. It is to show that you understand the job you have accepted and are genuinely prepared to do it.
