UK Coroner Rules Nigerian Caregiver’s Death a Suicide After Mental Health Struggles

A coroner’s court in the United Kingdom has concluded that a 27-year-old Nigerian caregiver, Beatrice Solomon, died by suicide after experiencing prolonged mental health difficulties linked to personal challenges.

The ruling was delivered during an inquest into the death of Solomon, who relocated from Nigeria to the UK in November 2023 on a skilled worker visa and had been working as a caregiver.

According to evidence presented at the hearing, Solomon was found unresponsive at her residence in Stanfield by her husband, Damian Butler, after he returned home from work. Emergency services responded to the incident, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police investigations found no evidence of foul play or the involvement of any other person in her death.

During the inquest, Butler told the court that his wife had struggled with her mental health in the months leading up to her death.

He said the difficulties were connected to personal issues, including challenges involving the local council, and revealed that he later learned she had previously experienced serious mental health crises.

A post-mortem examination established the medical cause of death, after which Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor concluded that Solomon had intentionally ended her life.

Expressing sympathy to the bereaved family, the coroner said the evidence indicated that Solomon had planned her actions, extending condolences to her husband, relatives and friends.

Solomon is survived by her husband, their young son and other family members.

Mental health experts have long noted that some migrants face heightened emotional and psychological pressures as they adapt to life in a new country.

The World Health Organization says factors such as separation from loved ones, financial strain, uncertainty, discrimination and cultural adjustment can increase the risk of mental health problems, underscoring the importance of timely support and access to appropriate care.
