TODAY IN HISTORY – 6th Oct, 2026 – ORBITS NEWS
By Valentine Uchechukwu Ndukwu.
A notable scholar once said that history does not belong to us, but we belong to it. I cannot but genuinely buy into this idea. And however you look at this quote, we cannot completely separate ourselves from our past because they are signposts to the makeup of our foundation.

For your reading pleasure, Today in History urges you to behold some remarkable events that happened on this day.

Today in History also shows that on this day in 1898, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the largest American music fraternity, was founded at the New England Conservatory of Music.

Still on this day in 1927, recorded the opening of The Jazz Singer, the first prominent “talkie” movie.

Sadly, on this day in 1943, World War II: Thirteen civilians are burnt alive by a paramilitary group in Crete during the Nazi occupation of Greece.

Again, on this day in 1973, Egypt and Syria launched coordinated attacks against Israel, beginning the Yom Kippur War.

Interestingly, on this day in 1977, we recorded the first prototype of the Mikoyan MiG-29, designated 9-01, making its maiden flight.

It was on this day in 1979 that Pope John Paul II became the first pontiff to visit the White House.

Sadly again, on this day in 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat is murdered by Islamic extremists.

It was on this day in 1995 that the first planet orbiting another sun, 51 Pegasi b, was discovered.

According to Today in History, on this day in 2007, Jason Lewis completed the first human-powered circumnavigation of the Earth.

Today in History also reveals that on this day in 2010, Instagram, a mainstream photo-sharing application, was founded.

Amazingly on this day in 2022, Annie Ernaux is awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

They may not want to show you this one more often but are you aware that on this day in 1948, British paleoanthropologist Mary Leakey discovered the first partial fossil skull of Proconsul africanus on Rusinga Island in Lake Victoria, Kenya? This remarkable discovery provided critical evidence regarding early primate evolution in Africa and solidified East Africa’s reputation as a foundational region for human evolutionary history

On the Nigerian soil, are you also aware that on this day in 1986, Nigeria’s military junta underwent a sudden and historic structural shakeup when Military President General Ibrahim Babangida announced the removal of Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe as the Chief of General Staff (the de facto Vice President)? Ukiwe, known for his principled stance, had openly opposed Nigeria’s controversial decision to secretly join the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), arguing it compromised Nigeria’s secular status. He was replaced on this day by Rear Admiral Augustus Aikhomu… (Smiles), they won’t teach you this one in their classrooms. Never!
