Pope Leo XIV Says Christ Remains the World’s Hope Despite War and Suffering
Pope Leo XIV has called on Christians to place their trust in Christ even as wars, violence and human suffering continue to affect millions across the world, saying lasting hope can only be found in God.
Delivering his Angelus address to thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, the pontiff said Jesus remains the source of freedom, forgiveness and hope for those weighed down by life’s struggles.
“In slavery, Christ is liberation. Amid the scourge of war, Christ is hope. In the hour of sin, Christ is forgiveness,” the Pope said, urging believers to remain steadfast in their faith despite the world’s challenges.
Reflecting on the day’s Gospel from Matthew 11:25-30, Pope Leo explained that Christ does not stand at a distance from human suffering but shares in it, carrying the burdens people are unable to bear on their own.
He said the cross, often seen as a symbol of pain, is also the place where evil is defeated and where believers can find healing, comfort and redemption.
The Pope stressed that following Jesus is not about embracing suffering for its own sake but about discovering genuine freedom through God’s love.
He added that Christ continues to give meaning and hope even in humanity’s darkest moments.
Pope Leo also warned against pride and self-reliance, saying many fail to recognize God’s presence because they depend too heavily on their own wisdom.
Instead, he encouraged believers to approach God with humility, noting that the Lord reveals Himself most clearly to those with open and trusting hearts.
Quoting Jesus’ invitation, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,” the pontiff said God’s message is directed especially to people carrying heavy emotional, spiritual and physical burdens.
He concluded by encouraging Christians to accept Christ’s invitation, describing a life rooted in selfless love and humility as the path to true peace, strength and lasting hope.
