Nigerian Choir Strikes Gold in Sweden, Claims World Choir Games Crown

Nigeria has earned a major honour on the global choral stage after the Mountain Top Chorale of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries emerged champion of the spiritual category at the 2026 World Choir Games in Helsingborg, Sweden.

The choir, conducted by Oluwasegun Okedunmola, secured the gold medal in Category C14, the Spiritual category, scoring 87.38 points in the highly competitive event.

The achievement was celebrated by the General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Daniel Olukoya, who described the victory as a proud moment for the choir, the ministry and Nigeria.

The World Choir Games, organised by Interkultur, is regarded as one of the biggest international gatherings of choirs.

This year’s competition is taking place from August 6 to 16 in Helsingborg, with more than 160 choirs from over 40 countries participating.

The organisers said about 8,500 singers had travelled to the Swedish coastal city to compete, perform and share in the cultural experience created by choral music.

Announcing the first champions of the 2026 edition, Interkultur said the participating choirs had competed at the highest level before the winners were recognised at the awards ceremony.

Olukoya, in a Facebook post celebrating the result, hailed the Mountain Top Chorale under the caption, “A CHAMPION’S SOUND! GOLD FOR MOUNTAIN TOP CHORALE!”

He disclosed that the choir received two major honours at the competition: the gold medal in the Spiritual category and the championship title in the Champions Competition.

According to him, the double achievement represented more than success in music, describing it as evidence of “discipline, excellence, dedication, teamwork and the power of using our gifts to glorify God.”

He also praised the choristers, their conductor, the choir’s leadership and everyone whose effort contributed to the international success.

The World Choir Games brings together choirs from across the globe for competitions covering different musical categories, making the Mountain Top Chorale’s performance a significant representation of Nigeria at the international event.

With its gold medal and championship title, the Nigerian choir has added another remarkable chapter to the country’s growing presence in international choral music.
