The highly anticipated Round of 32 clash was delayed by an hour due to severe thunderstorms in Mexico City, but the adverse weather did absolutely nothing to cool down the explosive momentum of Javier Aguirre’s relentless squad.

Fueled by an electric home crowd, El Tri essentially decided the match during a blistering nine-minute window in the first half.

Forward Julián Quiñones opened the scoring by finishing a brilliant through ball from Roberto Alvarado before veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead via a slick give-and-go inside the penalty area.

The monumental victory marks the very first time Mexico has won a World Cup knockout stage match since they hosted the tournament back in 1986.

While a frustrated Ecuador finished the match with ten men following a late red card to defender Piero Hincapié, flawless Mexico marches on to face either England or DR Congo on Sunday.
