How on Earth Would You Compare Ghana and Nollywood – Majid Michel Questions
Ghanaian actor Majid Michel has described comparisons between Ghana’s film industry and Nigeria’s Nollywood as unfair, arguing that population size gives Nigeria a natural advantage in producing more filmmakers and actors. Speaking in a recent interview with Y1079 FM in Accra, the veteran actor said comparing a country with fewer than 40 million people to Nigeria’s population of more than 200 million ignores a major difference in scale.
Michel explained that a larger population naturally creates a bigger pool of talent across different professions, including filmmaking. He argued that Nigeria’s higher number of filmmakers should therefore come as no surprise, given its much larger population.

The actor also cautioned Ghana against comparing itself with countries that have spent centuries building strong institutions and leadership systems. He described Ghana’s institutional development as still being at an early stage, suggesting that fair comparisons must take differences in population, history and development into account.
