Elon Musk Unveils $100bn SpaceX Launch Base in Louisiana
SpaceX is set to establish a massive new launch complex in Louisiana, with the project expected to become the company’s largest launch facility.
The Elon Musk-led company plans to invest about $100 billion in the development, which will be known as Starbase Louisiana.
The facility will occupy roughly 125,000 acres, or 50,585 hectares, expanding SpaceX’s presence beyond its current launch operations in Texas and Florida.
Work on the site is expected to begin in 2027, with SpaceX targeting 2029 for the first Starship launch from the Louisiana facility.
According to the company, the complex will be designed to handle thousands of Starship launches annually.
Those missions could include flights to Earth orbit, the Moon and eventually Mars, reflecting Musk’s long-term ambitions for human space exploration.
The project is also expected to bring thousands of jobs to the region, with more than 3,000 positions projected to be created directly.
Louisiana Economic Development estimates that workers could earn an average wage around 192 per cent above the region’s current average salary.
The agency further projects that the development could generate more than 8,100 additional jobs indirectly.
Louisiana officials have welcomed the project, saying it could significantly strengthen the state’s aerospace sector and attract more advanced space technology activities.
The name Starbase is already associated with SpaceX’s launch facility in southern Texas, which was incorporated as the city of Starbase in 2025 following approval by residents of Cameron County.
The Louisiana project forms part of Musk’s wider strategy to expand SpaceX’s activities as the company pursues ambitious plans involving the Moon, Mars, artificial intelligence and space-based data centres.
SpaceX and Tesla also announced plans in August for a $16.8 billion artificial intelligence chip manufacturing facility in Texas, known as Terafab.
The expansion comes after SpaceX’s Nasdaq debut in June, which was described as the largest stock market debut ever.
Despite the strong market reception, the company faces pressure from investors to demonstrate that it can maintain profitability while financing its increasingly expensive expansion programme.
SpaceX shares have dropped more than 30 per cent from their post-listing peak, although they remain above the initial $135 offer price.
