Antonelli Closes In on Historic Formula One Crown
Kimi Antonelli is on the verge of making Formula One history at the Mexico City Grand Prix, needing just two points to become the sport’s youngest-ever world champion. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver could also become Italy’s first Formula One champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a 73-year wait.

Antonelli heads into the weekend with nine victories from 18 races and a commanding 123-point lead over teammate George Russell, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton trails by 124 points. Both rivals must win and hope Antonelli finishes outside the top nine to keep their title hopes alive. Max Verstappen, a five-time winner in Mexico, is among the leading contenders for Sunday’s race.

While Mercedes could celebrate a historic drivers’ title and potentially secure the constructors’ championship, Mexican fans will also welcome Sergio Perez for his 300th Grand Prix start. The Cadillac driver has extended his contract through 2029, adding another major storyline to a weekend that could reshape Formula One history.
