US Mother Kills Four-Year-Old Daughter, Commits Suicide After Losing Custody

A custody dispute in Houston, Texas, ended in tragedy after a 35-year-old mother allegedly shot her four-year-old daughter and later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The woman, identified as Cibelle Savella, reportedly killed her daughter, Vivian, shortly after a family court hearing that granted primary custody of the child to her father, Aaron Savella.

The four-year-old girl was reportedly expected to leave with her father later that day following the court’s decision, which came after a prolonged custody dispute between her parents.

Police were called to the family’s home in west Houston after reports of a shooting and found Vivian dead from a gunshot wound.

Savella was also found at the residence with a gunshot injury and was taken to hospital for treatment, where she later died from her injuries.

Houston Police Department Lieutenant Larry Crowson confirmed that a custody hearing had taken place earlier that day and that the outcome had gone against the mother.

“There was a custody hearing earlier today that didn’t go well for the mother,” Crowson said.

According to reports, Savella returned to the family home after the hearing before the shooting occurred. Police have continued examining what happened between the court proceedings and the deaths.

The custody dispute reportedly began after Cibelle and Aaron’s divorce and had resulted in several court restrictions concerning the mother’s contact with Vivian.

Reports said the restrictions included supervised communication with the child, limitations on attending some of Vivian’s school activities and financial obligations towards the girl.

The reasons behind those restrictions have not been fully disclosed publicly.

Aaron’s lawyer, Charlotte Rainwater, described the incident as highly unusual, saying she had never encountered a similar case during her 28 years of practising family law.

The child’s relatives also defended Aaron’s actions during the custody dispute, maintaining that he complied with the court’s requirements while seeking to protect his daughter.

Through their lawyer, the family said Aaron trusted the judicial process, followed the orders issued by the court and waited for the custody proceedings to be resolved.

The deaths have left the family and community facing the devastating consequences of a custody dispute that ended with the loss of a young child and her mother.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the events that preceded it.
