Trump Pledges $5,000 To Americans If Republicans Win Election
US President Donald Trump has promised every adult American $5,000 if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress.
Trump made the pledge during a lengthy speech at the Republican convention in Dallas, Texas, ahead of the November elections.
“If the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000,” Trump told supporters during his nearly two-hour address.
The proposed payment could cost the US government more than $1 trillion, raising immediate questions about its funding and implementation.
Trump also urged voters to “pretend that I’m on the ballot,” despite his unpopularity and concerns among vulnerable Republican candidates.
He warned that Democrats could reverse Republican policies if they regain control of either the House or Senate.
“If we lose, you’re going to lose your border, you’re going to lose your tax cuts,” Trump said.
He also claimed his administration had delivered the most successful two years in presidential history financially and in other areas.
Trump’s comments came as Republicans attempted to energise their supporters through their first-ever midterm convention before the November congressional elections.
The Republican Party is facing difficult contests, with predictions suggesting Democrats could regain control of the House of Representatives.
Trump’s approval rating remains around 38 percent, while several Republican candidates competing in difficult races reportedly stayed away from the convention.
Despite the concerns, Trump insisted that his political influence would be crucial to Republican success during the elections.
The president also addressed the ongoing conflict with Iran, warning Tehran against provoking the United States.
He acknowledged the economic impact of rising oil prices while defending the decision to confront Iran over its alleged nuclear ambitions.
The convention appeared less crowded than expected, with empty seats visible during Trump’s speech despite his claim that the arena was full.
Democratic National Committee chairman Ken Martin criticised the gathering, describing it as a political spectacle centred on Trump.
Martin accused Trump of dragging Republicans toward defeat and described the president as a failed leader approaching the end of his term.
Trump is expected to address the convention again, although he has indicated that his next speech will be significantly shorter.
