Spain End Argentina’s Reign to Win the World Cup

Spain reclaimed football’s biggest prize on Sunday night, defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup in a gripping final at New York New Jersey Stadium.

The match appeared destined for penalties until Ferran Torres finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute.

Pedro Porro’s delivery into the box was brilliantly kept in play by Nico Williams before Torres reacted quickest to drive the ball beyond Emiliano Martínez, sparking wild celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters.

The victory handed Spain their second men’s World Cup title and ended Argentina’s reign as world champions after a fiercely contested contest that tested the patience and resilience of both sides.

Spain dominated possession and created the better chances throughout the game, but Martínez repeatedly frustrated Luis de la Fuente’s men with a series of outstanding saves that kept Argentina in the contest for more than 100 minutes.

Argentina’s task became even more difficult late in normal time when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, forcing the South Americans to play the remainder of the match with ten men.

Lionel Messi, making what is expected to be his final World Cup appearance, tried to inspire a late comeback but Argentina struggled to trouble Spain’s defence.

Their first real attempt on target came only in the closing moments of extra time as Spain comfortably protected their slender advantage.

The tension spilled over after the final whistle when players from both teams clashed in a heated confrontation.

Leandro Paredes was shown a straight red card after pushing Spain midfielder Gavi during the altercation, while teammates and officials rushed in to restore order.

The final attracted a host of world leaders, royalty and celebrities, turning football’s biggest occasion into a global spectacle.

A lavish opening ceremony and a star-studded halftime show added to the entertainment before Spain’s triumph ultimately stole the spotlight.

As the final whistle sounded, the celebrations belonged to La Roja. Ferran Torres’ extra-time strike proved enough to crown Spain world champions once again and bring Argentina’s reign at the summit of world football to an end.
