World Cup: Countries That Lifted the Trophy Twice in a Row
Winning the FIFA World Cup is the dream of every footballing nation, but defending the title has proved to be one of the toughest challenges in the sport.

Over the tournament’s nearly 100-year history, several champions have returned with hopes of retaining the crown, yet only a select few have managed to accomplish the feat.
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches its climax, the possibility of another nation joining that elite group has once again brought renewed attention to one of football’s rarest achievements.
Here are the countries that have successfully won the FIFA World Cup in consecutive editions.
Italy (1934 and 1938)
Italy became the first nation to retain the World Cup after winning the tournament on home soil in 1934. The Azzurri defeated Czechoslovakia 2-1 after extra time to claim their maiden title.
Four years later, they defended their crown in France under coach Vittorio Pozzo. Italy overcame Norway, hosts France and Brazil before defeating Hungary 4-2 in the final, with Silvio Piola scoring twice to seal a second straight World Cup triumph.
Their hopes of extending the streak were cut short when the 1942 and 1946 tournaments were cancelled because of the Second World War.
Brazil (1958 and 1962)
Brazil became the second nation to achieve the feat after emerging as football’s dominant force at the end of the 1950s.
The Seleção won their first World Cup in Sweden in 1958, where a 17-year-old Pelé announced himself on the global stage.
Alongside stars such as Garrincha, Didi, Vavá and Mário Zagallo, Brazil defeated hosts Sweden 5-2 in the final.
Brazil retained the trophy in Chile four years later despite losing Pelé to injury during the group stage. Garrincha inspired the team throughout the tournament as Brazil defeated Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final to secure consecutive World Cup titles.
The South Americans came close to an unprecedented third successive triumph in 1966, but their campaign ended with a shock exit in the group stage.
With another World Cup final set to be played, football fans around the world will be watching to see whether history welcomes a new member into one of the game’s most exclusive clubs.
