World Cup 2026: Cape Verde Exit Proud After Argentina Heartbreak

Cape Verde’s remarkable debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a painful end after a spirited 3-2 extra-time defeat to Argentina, but the tournament’s smallest nation left the competition with widespread admiration for its fearless performances.

The Blue Sharks pushed the defending champions to the limit, twice coming from behind before a deflected Cristian Romero header settled the Round of 32 tie.

Cape Verde had earlier impressed with a goalless draw against Spain, earned another point against Uruguay and showed they could compete with football’s biggest nations despite arriving at the tournament ranked 67th in the world.

Head coach Bubista said his players had proved that a small country could stand toe-to-toe with the world’s best, describing their campaign as a proud moment in the nation’s history.

Defender Roberto ‘Pico’ Lopes added that the team’s greatest achievement was putting Cape Verde on the global football map, while pundits James McFadden, Gary Neville and Ian Wright hailed the side as one of the tournament’s biggest success stories despite the defeat.

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha also emerged as one of the World Cup’s standout performers.

The 40-year-old, who is currently without a club, produced another string of outstanding saves against Argentina after his heroics against Spain, with Neville predicting his performances would earn him a new club before long.
