Nigeria Arrests Suspect Over AI Voice Deepfake of President Tinubu

Authorities in Nigeria have arrested a man accused of creating and spreading an AI-generated audio clip that impersonated President Bola Tinubu, intensifying concerns over the growing misuse of artificial intelligence in political communication.

The suspect, identified as Ifechukwu Dennis, is alleged to have produced a synthetic voice recording that mimicked the president and circulated it widely on social media, where it quickly gained traction among users.

The manipulated audio reportedly featured fabricated remarks attributed to President Tinubu, touching on upcoming elections and insecurity in parts of the country.

It spread rapidly online, sparking debate and confusion before officials moved to address it.

According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the arrest was carried out in Benin City, Edo State, by an elite police unit.

He disclosed the development in a post shared on X, confirming that the suspect was being held in connection with the incident.

Authorities say the content was deliberately designed to mislead the public, raising alarms about how easily AI-generated media can be weaponised to influence political sentiment, especially during sensitive periods.

The presidency swiftly dismissed the audio as fake, warning that it was intended to deceive citizens and fuel misinformation.

Officials have repeatedly urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it, particularly on social media platforms and messaging apps where false content can spread quickly.

In recent statements, the government cautioned that the election season could see a surge in digitally amplified propaganda, with bad actors potentially using AI tools to fabricate messages, distort narratives, and inflame public tension.

The incident has added to wider global concerns about deepfake technology and its potential impact on democratic processes, as governments and tech platforms struggle to keep pace with increasingly realistic synthetic media.
