Google Locks In $920M-a-Month AI Deal With SpaceX as Gemini Demand Sparks Compute Arms Race

Google is turning to SpaceX for a massive injection of AI computing power as demand for its Gemini platform continues to accelerate, intensifying Silicon Valley’s race for high-end infrastructure.

According to a regulatory filing, Google has agreed to pay around $920 million every month for access to a large-scale GPU cluster powered by NVIDIA chips.

The system, hosted in SpaceX-operated data centers, is expected to provide roughly 110,000 GPUs alongside supporting infrastructure.

The agreement runs through mid-2029 and could total close to $30 billion, making it one of the largest known AI compute contracts to date.

It also strengthens SpaceX’s expanding position in the artificial intelligence infrastructure market just as the company approaches a highly anticipated Nasdaq debut.

Google plans to start full payments in October 2026, while benefiting from discounted pricing during an initial ramp-up phase ending in September.

SpaceX is required to meet full delivery of the computing capacity by September 30, 2026, with Google retaining the right to cancel the deal if deadlines are missed after a short grace period.

The contract also gives Google flexibility to scale down GPU usage in exchange for reduced fees, a structure designed to manage fluctuating demand for Gemini Enterprise services.

A Google Cloud spokesperson described the arrangement as a short-term capacity bridge, noting that customer demand has outpaced internal projections.

The spokesperson added that securing additional compute power has become urgent as AI workloads surge across enterprise products, with NVIDIA GPUs remaining the backbone of large-scale model training and deployment.

For SpaceX, the deal adds to a growing portfolio of AI infrastructure partnerships. The company previously signed a compute agreement with Anthropic reportedly worth over $1 billion per month, tied to its data center operations in Memphis.

Those facilities were initially built for Elon Musk’s xAI, but have since evolved into a broader commercial computing network serving external clients.

Recent filings also revealed that xAI recorded a $6.4 billion operating loss against $3.2 billion in revenue last year, highlighting the steep cost of scaling advanced AI systems.

The filing further pointed to flexible exit clauses in the Google-SpaceX deal, allowing either party to terminate the agreement after December 2026 with advance notice.

Beyond cloud computing, both companies are reportedly exploring longer-term ideas such as orbital data centers powered by rockets and satellites, signaling how deeply the AI boom is reshaping the relationship between aerospace and tech giants.
