We only sent our daughter to school to be useful to us and the world at large… — Villages Demand Justice Over Nursing Student’s Death

Residents from seven villages in Anunu Ukwu, reportedly in Abia State, staged a protest following the death of their daughter, Chinwendu Wendy Achumba, a young nursing student.

The deceased was reportedly raped and brutally murdered by two men after she allegedly rejected their advances, in her room where she stayed alone after her neighbours in the same compound had travelled to Enugu for an orthopedic experience.

The protesters marched through their communities chanting mourning songs and demanding swift justice over what they described as a brutal killing.

Chinwendu, who completed her Basic Midwifery training at ABSUTH before proceeding for Post-Basic Nursing studies in Umulogho, Imo State, was said to have been living alone at the time of the incident.

Reports indicate that two men allegedly broke into her residence at night and overpowered her.

The suspects were later arrested and reportedly confessed to staying in the house from about 7 p.m. until the following morning.

The incident has sparked outrage across the affected communities, with residents insisting that the punishment must match the severity of the crime.

They rejected any form of lenient sentencing, warning that justice must not be delayed or weakened.

A community spokesperson said they would not accept what they described as a short prison term for the suspects.

“We only sent our daughter to school to be useful to us and the world at large,” one grieving relative said during the protest, as emotions ran high.

The villagers are demanding full justice for the victim, insisting that any delay in prosecution could heighten tensions in the area.
