US Firm Raises Fresh Questions Over Tinubu’s Future
A US-based policy advisory and lobbying firm has raised fresh questions about President Bola Tinubu’s legal future after he leaves office.
Von Batten-Montague-York made the claim in a post on its verified X account on Tuesday while discussing documents concerning longstanding heroin-trafficking allegations.
The firm stressed that the documents it reviewed do not establish that the US government intends to prosecute Tinubu.
It said responses from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Drug Enforcement Administration raised questions about whether an investigation or enforcement proceeding remains active.
According to the firm, both agencies were asked to confirm that no investigation or enforcement proceeding concerning the cases remained pending more than 30 years later.
It said the FBI and DEA declined to confirm this, stating that they were not obligated to comment on existing investigations or proceedings.
The firm said its reading of court filings suggested Tinubu could face criminal charges after leaving office, when presidential immunity ratione personae would end.
It also pointed to references to wiretaps in FBI and DEA filings, noting that some individuals linked to the investigation have died.
However, the firm acknowledged that the agencies’ refusal to confirm an investigation does not prove that charges are coming against Tinubu.
It nevertheless said the agencies’ responses raised questions about whether the matter could still have legal implications for Tinubu after his presidency.
