US and Iran Trade Strikes as Gulf Conflict Intensifies

The United States has struck Iranian military targets following weekend operations in the Gulf.

The action marks a fresh escalation in hostilities between both sides amid rising regional tensions.

The development comes as negotiations continue over a fragile ceasefire arrangement. Diplomatic efforts remain ongoing despite repeated exchanges of fire.

Iran said it responded by targeting a US military base in the region, describing the move as retaliation for American attacks on its forces.

The Revolutionary Guard said the strike was linked to US military activity against Iranian positions.

US Central Command said its action followed what it described as hostile Iranian activity, including the downing of a US MQ-1 drone operating over international waters.

It said the drone incident prompted immediate retaliatory strikes.

According to Centcom, US fighter aircraft destroyed Iranian air defence systems and a ground control station, and also neutralised two one-way attack drones during the operation.

It said the strikes were carried out to protect US forces and maritime routes in the region.

Iran did not identify the exact base it said it targeted, but stated that the facility was linked to operations in southern Iran.

Details of the strike location were not immediately clarified.

Air defence systems in Kuwait reportedly intercepted incoming missiles and drones during the latest exchange, with sirens sounding across parts of the country, according to state media reports.

The latest confrontation comes despite ongoing diplomatic talks aimed at stabilising the ceasefire that has repeatedly been tested by intermittent strikes since April.

Efforts to de-escalate the situation have yet to produce lasting results.

The violence has heightened concerns over security around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route for oil, with disruptions continuing to affect energy markets.

The broader conflict involving US and Israeli operations against Iran-linked targets, which began earlier in the year, has already resulted in heavy casualties and increased regional instability.

Washington maintains that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains a central objective, while political pressure continues domestically over rising fuel prices ahead of elections.

Negotiations are ongoing over sanctions relief and frozen Iranian oil revenues, but both sides remain divided on key conditions for any long-term agreement.

Separately, Israeli operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah continue alongside the wider regional tensions, with diplomatic efforts underway to contain further escalation.
