UN Is No Different From a New York Coffee Shop — Turkish Speaker Blasts Global Body

The Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Numan Kurtulmuş, has launched a strong criticism of the United Nations, saying the organisation has failed in its responsibility to prevent conflicts and ensure accountability on the global stage.

Speaking at a forum titled “Turkey in a Changing World: A Partner, a Balancing Factor, a Strategic Actor”, organised by the Finland–Turkey Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, he said the international system is undergoing a deep institutional crisis.

“The institutions of the global system have collapsed,” Kurtulmuş said, arguing that bodies designed to maintain peace are no longer effective in stopping wars or addressing acts of aggression.

He further questioned the relevance of the United Nations in today’s world, saying, “Unfortunately, the United Nations is no different from a New York coffee shop.

They have no influence, are incapable of resolving conflicts, preventing aggression, declaring a criminal guilty, and remain powerless.”

He added that the organisation now functions more like an office in New York than a meaningful global authority.

Kurtulmuş also said the post–World War II international order is facing serious strain, with institutions failing to adapt to modern geopolitical realities and rising global tensions.
