I cannot agree more when David McCullough said “history is who we are and why we are the way we are.”

Because the central idea behind that statement makes more sense when you consider William Faulkner’s view that “the past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

It is on this premise that “Today in History ” has lined up beautiful moments and parchments of history in our time.

On this day in 1509, an earthquake known as “The Lesser Judgment Day” hit Constantinople.

Regrettably on this day in 1622, fifty-five Christians were executed in Nagasaki during the Great Genna Martyrdom.

Remarkably on this day in 1846, Elias Howe is granted a patent for the sewing machine.

Still on this day in 1858, George Mary Searle discovers the asteroid 55 Pandora.

Today in history reveals that on this day in 1936, the first world individual Speedway World Championship was held at London’s Wembley Stadium.

In 1942, on this day, World War II: The British Army carried out an amphibious landing on Madagascar to re-launch Allied offensive operations in the Madagascar Campaign.

Amazingly on this day in 1960, at the Summer Olympics in Rome, Abebe Bikila became the first sub-Saharan African to win a gold medal, winning the marathon in bare feet.

Sadly on this day in 1961, in the Italian Grand Prix, a crash caused the death of German Formula One driver Wolfgang von Trips and 15 spectators who were hit by his Ferrari, the deadliest accident in F1 history.

It was on this day in 1974 that Guinea-Bissau gained independence from Portugal.

Interestingly, on this day in 2001, during his appearance on the British TV game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, contestant Charles Ingram reaches the £1 million top prize, but it was later revealed that he had cheated to the top prize by listening to coughs from his wife and another contestant.

According to Today in History, it was on this day in 2008 that the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, described as the biggest scientific experiment in history, is powered up in Geneva, Switzerland.

In 2022, on this day, the death of Queen Elizabeth II: King Charles III was formally proclaimed as monarch at a meeting of the Accession Council in St James’s Palace.

Again, on this day in 2024, Nigeria recorded the collapse of Alau Dam which triggered devastating floods in Borno State, massive loss, displacement, and zoo devastation.

Today is the birthday of Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro. For the records, Major Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro was a celebrated Nigerian nationalist, activist, and former military officer. He was born in Oloibiri (today Bayelsa State) on this day in 1938. Boro later led the Niger Delta Revolt in 1966 advocating for the rights of minority communities, before being killed in the Nigerian Civil War in 1968.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). For the records, it is an awareness day always observed on 10 September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003. Furthermore, the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) to host World Suicide Prevention Day. In 2011 an estimated 40 countries held awareness events to mark the occasion.
