Again on October 10, 2002, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague delivered its definitive and highly controversial verdict on the decades-long boundary dispute between Nigeria and Cameroon. The court ruled that sovereignty over the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula belonged to Cameroon, basing its decision primarily on early 1913 Anglo-German colonial agreements. This historic ruling forced Nigeria to eventually withdraw its military forces and officially transfer the territory, permanently reshaping the map and maritime borders of West Africa.

On October 10, 1977, Nigerian Head of State General Olusegun Obasanjo landed at Andrews Air Force Base for a landmark official state visit to the United States. This marked the first time a sitting Nigerian leader paid a state visit to a U.S. President (Jimmy Carter). The monumental discussions centered around African liberation movements, the fight against apartheid in South Africa, and regional economic independence. This diplomatic breakthrough directly paved the way for President Carter’s return visit to Lagos a few months later, which was the first-ever official state visit by a U.S. President to sub-Saharan Africa.
